I saw

While driving,
I saw…

Few gulls,
Making noises and having fun in the air,
As if they had come for the picnic,
From the seashore, which was their home.

Puffed clouds,
Aware, omnipresent, detached,
Floating in the blinding white sky.
Not forcing themselves,
Just going with the flow

A farmland,
Silently grazing innocent cattle,
Unaware that, They will soon become,
Breakfast for humans.

I stopped seeing…
And just drove…

The Bandit Queen

I recently saw “Bandit Queen”, movie by Shekar Kapur. Indeed it was a brilliantly made movie, and I should say the movie explicitly pointed out some of the ills (unfortunately) still affecting India. The movie was based on the life of Phoolan Devi, the dacoit of the chambal, but phoolan devi herself disowned the movie after the release. Still the movie was an excellent piece of work by Shekhar Kapur.

Recently the Bandit Queen, Phoolan Devi, who had become a member of parliament, was shot dead. The investigations are going on and will go on..

Islam.

BBC celebrated this week as Islam week. I watched a program late night on BBC2 about Islam, and the civilization that it has been, around the period of 900 AD to 1100 AD. It was a wonderful program, which cleared some misconceptions about Islam. Islamic civilization reached the peak during this period. Baghdad, which was the capital of the Islamic civilization, was a city par excellence, much advanced for that period of time and most of the intellectuals of that period had gathered there. These scholars and Intellectuals, translated volumes of the books from various cultures, like Greek Philosophy books, Number system from India, all the available knowledge was being translated to Arabic.

This is the period where “paper” was a rare commodity in Europe and Arabs mastered the use of paper and books. Islamic civilization spread far and wide. But one Muslim king from Egypt committed a great blunder, which caused a major turn-around for Islamic civilization. The above king destroyed the Christian church of Jerusalem, which angered the pope-dom and led to the future crusades. Kingdoms in Islamic civilizations were not united at that time, which helped the crusaders and the ferocious Mongols who came later. The Mongols invaded from Far East, they were great warriors and they took control of Baghdad. They destroyed many structures, burnt many books and plundered the whole city. But in three decades, they got converted to Islam and started spreading Islam.

Fear

Fear!! I felt it..
it terrified me and made me realise,
how vulnerable I am,
terrified, I looked for some escape route
I ran far, shut down completely
it followed me, laughed, the evil laughter
Squarely at my face.
finally left me, exhausted,
gasping for life, breath.

:

I decided
I will run no more.

The true story behind Stonehenge.

Time: 2800 BC, Location: Salisbury, present day England.

The chieftain of the clan, hubbylulu, was really powerful, he was a just ruler and the clan was proud that they had such a wonderful leader. There was only one weakness of the chieftain, a hobby, of collecting huge stone boulders and polishing them. Other clans knew his weakness and used to send huge boulders as gifts to this leader. The leaders of the clan – Huobou, situated in present day Wales sent most of the stones. Hubbylulu had a wife wifeylulu., who just hated the stones. There used to be domestic problems because of the boulders piling up at their house. Finally the Hubbylulu ordered his minister to keep the stones somewhere, where the chieftain could visit them. The minister, who had masters degree in circular art, arranged the stones in a particular fashion., and located them at different places. The minister also had a hobby, but his was of collecting wood. For arranging the stones, he followed the same pattern of the woods..

Time flew by, Romans invaded, many of these structures were destroyed.. In time these structures were ignored, till in mid 20th century, where some archaeologists began studying the structure.. They concluded it as an enigma, an unsolved mystery of ages and named it Stonehenge. Druids claimed the place as their, and so did several people.. Legends started sprouting up, and today the ruins attract more tourists, who look at it amazingly.. and wonder and tell how they were “spirituallly” touched and how wonderful the structure was!! Indeed, some universities also pitched in studying the Henges. Today its one of the world’s famous mysteries. Still there are lot of stories about the henges, but no one knows about the chieftain-hubbylulu and his minister and their pranks!!

ps: Ok.. I made up part of the story..
